要旨：
Recent scholarship has minimized the role of the state in ancient Egyptian irrigation, stressing instead the primacy of local actors.  This paper reassesses the contribution of state governments through a diachronic analysis of a single region—the Fayyum—between the Hellenistic and Medieval periods.  It argues that although state oversight was critical to the maintenance of the Fayyum’s original Ptolemaic design, the interior of the region could be sustained by local agency.  State governments thus played an important role in shaping the region but were not essential to its survival.
